Slave King

The first in a series of illustrations for a contemporary re-telling of the four Gospels in the New Testament. The content of the books center around the idea that Jesus Christ is both god and man – an interplay of power and humility, spiritual and physical, broken & whole. The illustrations will seek to capture these dualities. In this first image, I was fascinated by the idea of creating a neo-religious icon. I presented the figure of Christ as the foot-washer from the Gospel of John in an iconic, perhaps heroic way, juxtaposed with the visual cues of battle, servitude, and death.
